do you confiscate strings and cords?

i have ptsd and suicide for life. i didn't choose either.

for suicide september, i'll share some of my experience.

warning: this is about suicide.

[please give consent or stop reading]

a lack of awareness in suicide treatment perpetuates this epidemic.

safety in awareness fuels prevention.

goals for suicide sept: suicide awareness

everyone with suicide is keenly aware of it. where does awareness need to be built?

realistic ideal: individual outcomes in suicide prevention improve with increased awareness around treating suicide at the facility/practitioner level

i fully disclosed the severity of my ptsd and intensity of suicide to each facility/practitioner prior to entering treatment.

my facts about suicide:

-i was diagnosed with ptsd and suicide during my first hospitalization in a residential facility

-i was hospitalized at the same residential facility a second time for increased levels of ptsd/suicide

-i was elevated from this facility to a locked level 1 facility for ptsd/suicide (no change in level of ptsd/suicide from admission to elevation)

-i was discharged from a locked level 1 facility w significantly elevated levels of ptsd/suicide

-i was discharged from residential treatment w fully disclosed, significantly elevated levels of ptsd/suicide

-100% of my time in active suicidality, including all suicide attempts, occurred after i was discharged from treatment

-number of professional treatment terminations during active suicidality: 3

i was told there wasn’t a facility/program to go to next if i felt i couldn’t manage my level of ptsd/suicide by:

  1. the facility i discharged from

  2. every facility i contacted from that point on

  3. every practitioner i saw from that point on

how does suicide prevention happen if care for suicide doesn’t exist/is so hard to find?

there is no certification/accreditation required to treat individuals with suicide. effective suicide treatment programs emerge from experienced practitioners, structure, planning, and the culture of the program as it develops over time.

suicide prevention can increase by building awareness around the true capacity of a facility/practitioner to treat suicide.

if you confiscate strings and cords, you’re knowingly treating people with suicide.

if you confiscate strings and cords and elevate for suicide, you’re lacking awareness of what you treat.

a lack of awareness in suicide treatment perpetuates this epidemic.

safety in awareness fuels prevention.

look guys, i’m still alive.
